Mayan Ruins
Just south of Playa del Carmen is Tulum, largest of the coastal cities built by the Maya and the only one the Mayans still inhabited when the Spanish arrived. The largest building at Tulum is the Castillo, overlooking the Caribbean from a 40-foot cliff. Exploring this fascinating archeological site is a great way to spend a day.

Day Trips
Another nearby destination is Akumal, the "Place of the Turtle," a palm-fringed bay protected by a natural barrier reef. And just 12 miles off the coast is Cozumel, a lovely island with secluded coves, great beaches, and beautiful reefs. The 45-minute ferry ride makes it a perfect day trip. Craving something a little livelier, maybe some serious shopping? Head up to Cancun.
