Implemented on January 23, 2007
ALL PERSONS traveling by air between the United States, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean region are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.

Passengers unable to comply with a request by the ticketing agent to present a passport will not be allowed to board the aircraft.

While it is true that the U.S. Department of State granted temporary travel flexibility to those with passport applications in process, this accommodation expired on September 30, 2007 and there are no plans announced to extend this flexibility.

According to the State Department, travelers planning international trips should apply for passports during the fall rather than waiting. Historically the department receives "fewer passport applications during the fall, making it the best time to apply." The department also cautioned against waiting until January to apply as the month marks the beginning of the "busy season" and may result in "longer processing times." Currently, the processing time for routine passport applications is down to four to six weeks.
